Late Friday afternoon, a homeowner stopped by our Lakewood Drive shop with a handful of rough measurements. She had an inherited oak dining table that was starting to show wear around the corners, along with a couple of patio end tables that needed fresh surfaces before fall entertaining.

Before taking an order, we like to pull out the sample pieces on our showroom counter so folks can see and feel the physical differences in edge profiles and glass types. It is one thing to read about edge finishes online, but holding a piece of heavy polished glass in your hands makes the decision a lot clearer.

Selecting Thickness and Edge Work

When protecting wooden surfaces, standard 1/4-inch glass is usually the sweet spot. It provides solid impact resistance without adding unnecessary weight to the furniture frame. For freestanding tops where the glass sits directly on a metal or wooden base without continuous support underneath, we usually recommend jumping up to 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch thickness.

We spent about twenty minutes comparing edge details on the counter. A simple flat polish gives a clean, modern square profile with slight seaming to take off the sharp corners. For her dining room piece, she preferred a smooth pencil edge, which rounds off the perimeter nicely and resists chipping if a chair back accidentally bumps into it. Getting tabletop and shelf glass cut to size means taking those minor daily interactions into account so the finished piece lasts.

Low-Iron vs. Standard Clear Glass

Another detail we looked at on the display counter was glass clarity. Standard clear float glass naturally carries a slight green hue along the cut edges due to the iron content in the material. On dark stained wood or outdoor metal, that green edge often blends right in. However, over light painted wood or white surfaces, low-iron glass keeps the colors underneath true to tone.
